Yo, let me tell you where my batteries sleep.
Second bedroom. The one the lease calls a guest room and no guest has ever confirmed. Bench along one wall, clamps on the door, and up top a shelf where the charger lives with a pack in it most nights. The far side of that wall is a neighbor's bedroom. Prewar plaster, thin enough that I know when their alarm goes off.
So when I had four "DeWalt-compatible" 5Ah packs sitting in a cart at thirty bucks each, the question was never whether they'd spin my drill. Probably they would. It's what's on that shelf at 2 a.m., eighteen inches from somebody else's pillow.
Four Packs for the Price of One
Here's the arithmetic that gets you. On August 19, 2026, Vanon listed its "VANON PRO For Dewalt 20V Max DCB200 Battery 5Ah Replacement" at $36.99 for one, $63.99 for two, $119.99 for four. CEENR listed a 5.0Ah DeWalt-compatible pack "From $35.99." Same day, The Power Tool Store had a genuine DeWalt DCB205 at $119.00, against a compare-at price of $179.00.
Four aftermarket packs, or one real one, same money. If you buy tools in installments like I do, that number does something to your brain.
Ten Cells and Some Fourth-Grade Math
Check this at your own bench. ToolGuyd's DeWalt 20V battery guide, updated May 17, 2026, lists the 5Ah DCB205 as 18650 5S2P. Ten cells: five groups in series, two per group. Five times 3.6 volts nominal is 18 volts, so "20V MAX" on the label is the no-load maximum, not the nominal voltage. Two cells in parallel at 2.5Ah each gives the 5.0Ah. And 18 volts times 5 amp-hours is about 90 watt-hours. Hold that number.
Samsung SDI publishes a sheet for a cell titled "Lithium-ion rechargeable cell for power tools," the INR18650-25R: 2,500mAh, 3.6V nominal, 20 amps maximum continuous discharge. That's the class of part the number is built from.
Now the honest part. What I can read is the seller's copy. Vanon says its pack is "built with premium 18650 cells from leading brands" and names no brand, which is odd, because Samsung, LG, Molicel and Sanyo all publish part numbers you could brag about. It claims "IEC62133 certified" with no certificate number and no test lab. And the spec block lists "Nominal Voltage: 20V," which by the math above is just wrong. Small tell, but one you can catch holding the pack.
The Safety Isn't in the Pack. It's in the Charger.
Sevarg.net tore down a DeWalt DCB207, the 1.3Ah 20V MAX pack, and found Samsung INR18650-13B cells in 5S and no dedicated battery-management board inside the pack at all. Cells wired straight to B+ and B-, balance leads C1 through C4 exposed, a 10k thermistor on the positive terminal, a 320-ohm resistor identifying the pack type. The author compares it to a hobby LiPo pack: management is external, living in the charger and the tool.
That's one 1.3Ah pack torn down in 2017, and I won't claim it holds for every pack DeWalt makes. But it reframes the argument. The charger is the thing watching your cells. DeWalt's manual describes a Hot/Cold Pack Delay that suspends charging when it detects a pack too hot or too cold, and that feature is only as good as the thermistor signal it reads. A pack that presents B+, B- and enough of an ID to latch and pull current gets charged blind.
UL Solutions puts it in standards language: under UL 62841-1, "the charger and battery pack are required to be investigated as a complete system." Certified as a pair. Buy half the pair somewhere else and the premise is gone. Pro Tool Reviews said the plain version in June 2021: aftermarket packs "do not communicate with the tool the way it was designed," and your tool warranty "is voided the moment you lock it into the tool." DeWalt lists three years on the DCB205. Vanon lists one year.
One in a Million, or One in Ten Million
Battery University has the cleanest statement of what you're paying for. General lithium-ion failure rate: less than one in a million. Quality cells: better than one in ten million. That gap isn't visible through a wrapper, it's manufacturing cleanliness. The classic internal short happens when "microscopic metal particles may come into contact with other parts of the battery cell," and once a cell is into runaway it can hit 500°C, where no protection circuit saves you. For scale: a one-in-200,000 breakdown rate triggered the 2006 recall of almost six million lithium-ion packs.
OSHA's lithium-ion fact sheet lists what starts thermal runaway: "internal short circuiting due to defects during manufacturing, mechanical damage to the battery, exposure to excessive heat or cold, and improper charging." First item and last item. Manufacturing defect, improper charging. Exactly the two variables you change when you put an off-brand pack on a shelf charger.
No federal backstop, either. CPSC's proposed lithium-ion rule from June 24, 2026 covers eBikes, eScooters, hoverboards and eUnicycles, replacement packs included, and the phrase "power tool" never appears in it. Washington looked at cheap uncertified replacement batteries, decided a mandatory rule was warranted, and drew the line at products with wheels.
Go through CPSC's database and the pattern is loud. Ryobi, February 2013: 54,200 P108 packs in the US, hazard language verbatim, the pack "can overheat and burst while on a charger." DR Power, June 2025: 13,200 62V LiPRO packs that "can short-circuit and ignite," with a remedy that makes you upload two photographs proving you destroyed the pack. And July 9, 2026: about 554,780 Kobalt yard tools recalled because "charging the lithium-ion batteries through the USB-C port, while the batteries are inserted in the yard power tools can cause the batteries to short-circuit." Thirty-four reports of smoke, sparking or fire.
On the aftermarket side there's exactly one multi-brand replacement recall on record: RAYOVAC CTL-series packs sold at BatteriesPlus for about $60 as replacements for eight tool brands, DeWalt and Makita and Milwaukee among them. 111,800 units in December 2011 after five reports of packs exploding, another 65,300 in August 2012 with three more, including an injured finger. Those were NiCd and NiMH, not lithium. A data point about the business model, not a runaway story.
The Room You Can't Put a Smoke Alarm In
Here's the finding I'd tattoo on the charger. DeWalt's manual carries this as a warning: "Only charge when battery temperature is over 40°F (4.5°C) and below 104°F (40°C)." The US Fire Administration says don't charge below 32°F or above 105°F. Samsung's cell datasheet permits 0 to 50°C. Three sources, three windows. Take the tightest, the pack maker's, because that extra margin is the engineering you paid for.
Now line that up against NFPA 72, as adopted into code: "Smoke alarms and smoke detectors shall not be located within unfinished attics or garages or in other spaces where temperatures can fall below 40°F (4°C) or exceed 100°F (38°C)."
Same window, within four degrees. So the unheated garage, the shed and the attic sit outside DeWalt's charging range for a good chunk of the year and are code-excluded from having a smoke alarm. Worse, IRC Table R302.6 separates that attached garage from the house with at least half-inch gypsum board. It's a fire-rated box: great for containing a fire, terrible for hearing one start. The fix is cheap and already in the code. IRC R314.2.1 requires a heat detector or heat alarm in new attached garages, and if your house predates that, adding an interconnected one is the highest-value move here after "don't charge it at 35 degrees."
The joke on those of us in apartments is that the spare bedroom, worst room by every other measure, is the one room code guarantees a smoke alarm in. NFPA's guidance says "it's best to charge large devices (e-bikes, e-scooters, tools) outside, away from doors and windows." Tools, in the parenthesis, next to e-bikes. I don't have an outside. I've got a fire escape.
So do what the manual says. Hard surface, not a towel and not a dusty scrap of MDF, because DeWalt vents that charger through slots in the top and the bottom and half of them face down. Nothing stacked on it. Pack comes off when it's full and gets stored out of the charger. Keep it clear of the dust stream too, because the manual warns that inserting or removing a pack "may ignite the dust or fumes." That clause reads different in a woodshop.
What I'd Actually Do
I bought one real pack instead of four cheap ones, and it stung. If your housing is intact there's a middle road: MTO Battery lists a DCB205 recell service at $61.50, where you send in your housing and electronics and they swap the cells. That keeps the thermistor, the ID resistor and the balance taps your charger is trying to talk to.
Then move the shelf. Hard non-combustible surface, above 40°F, out of the dust, away from anything that burns, unplugged when the light goes green. Garage charger, add the heat alarm. Fire Prevention Week runs October 4 to 10, 2026, themed "Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower." Do it that week.
One caution on scale, because I won't overstate this. The best fire testing out there, from UL's Fire Safety Research Institute, burned e-mobility batteries, not tool packs. In a closed bedroom they measured roughly 20 seconds from first smoke to a battery gas explosion that failed the windows. What carries over is FSRI's garage-experiment conclusion: lithium-ion thermal runaway "effectively always produces a flammable mixture of gas and vapor." Gas first, ignition after, and the gap measured in seconds.
That's why the shelf matters more than the pack.
