Wood moves — plan for it or pay for it
Wood is hygroscopic: it constantly gains and loses moisture with the seasons, and as it does it shrinks and swells. Ignore that and you get cracked panels, split tabletops, drawers that jam in summer and rattle in winter, and breadboard ends that split off. This wood movement calculator estimates how much a board will change across its width when its moisture content changes from one value to another — by species and by grain orientation — so you can design the right allowances in from the start.
Why wood moves (and which way)
Below the fiber-saturation point — around 28–30% moisture content — wood shrinks as it dries and swells as it takes on moisture. Almost all of that happens across the grain; movement along the length of a board is so small it’s usually ignored. Across the grain, wood moves in two directions at different rates: tangentially (roughly parallel to the growth rings — the face of a flatsawn board) and radially (across the rings — the face of a quartersawn board). Tangential movement is typically 1.5 to 2 times the radial, which is why quartersawn lumber is prized for stability.
How wood movement is calculated
The amount of change is estimated with the species’ dimensional-change coefficient:
change = width × C × (MC_final − MC_initial)
where width is the board’s width, C is the coefficient per 1% change in moisture content (the tangential coefficient for flatsawn, the smaller radial one for quartersawn), and the last term is the moisture-content swing. The coefficients here are nominal averages from the USDA Forest Products Laboratory Wood Handbook; your actual stock varies with density, grain, and finish, so treat the result as a well-grounded estimate.
What moisture content should I use?
Wood in service settles to an equilibrium moisture content (EMC) set by the surrounding humidity, and that changes with the seasons. In much of the interior of a heated home, wood cycles roughly between 6% in a dry winter and 9–12% in a humid summer; unheated shops, garages, and humid climates run higher. Kiln-dried lumber typically arrives around 6–8%. For a realistic worst case, use the driest and dampest EMC your piece will actually see — a wall cabinet in Arizona and a farmhouse table in the humid South face very different swings.
Worked example
A 10-inch-wide flatsawn red oak panel that goes from 12% moisture content down to 7% shrinks roughly two-tenths of an inch across its width. Build that panel captured tightly in a solid frame or glued into fixed breadboard ends and it will split; give it room to move — a floating panel, elongated screw holes, a breadboard pinned only at the centre — and it lives happily for decades. The same panel in quartersawn oak moves noticeably less.
How to design for wood movement
- Frame-and-panel doors and sides let a wide panel float freely in its groove.
- Breadboard ends should be glued only at the centre, with elongated holes and pins toward the edges.
- Fasten wide tops with figure-8 clips, wood buttons, or slotted holes so the top can expand and contract.
- Allow gaps on inset drawer fronts and doors — a hair looser in dry weather.
- Acclimate and orient: let lumber reach the shop’s EMC before building, and favor quartersawn where stability matters most.
Frequently asked questions
How much does wood move seasonally?
It depends on species, width, grain orientation, and the moisture swing. A wide flatsawn hardwood panel can move an eighth of an inch or more across its width between a humid summer and a dry winter; a narrow quartersawn board moves far less.
Does flatsawn or quartersawn move more?
Flatsawn (tangential) moves noticeably more across its width than quartersawn (radial) of the same species — often close to double. That’s the main reason quartersawn is chosen for tabletops, doors, and anything that needs to stay flat.
Does wood move along its length?
Almost none — longitudinal movement is a tiny fraction of a percent and is normally ignored. Design for movement across the width, not the length.
