Lay out box joints and dovetails that actually line up

The difference between crisp, gap-free corner joinery and a fussy mess is almost always the layout. This calculator does the arithmetic for both box (finger) joints and dovetails, giving you evenly-sized fingers or tails and the exact positions to mark from a single reference edge — so both mating boards match perfectly and every joint closes.

Box (finger) joints

A box joint is a row of interlocking square fingers. It looks best — and is strongest — when the board is divided into a whole number of equal fingers, with a finger (not a gap) at each edge so the corner is symmetrical. Enter your board width and a target finger width, and the tool snaps to the nearest whole count and lists every cut line. Common finger sizes are ¼", ⅜", and ½"; match the finger width to your material thickness for a balanced look, and cut with a dado stack or a box-joint jig set to exactly that width.

Dovetails

Dovetails add mechanical strength — the flared tails resist being pulled apart — and a hand-cut look. This tool lays them out with a half-pin at each edge and equal tails between, the traditional arrangement that keeps the corner symmetrical and strong. Given the board width, the number of tails, and your pin width (measured at the narrow baseline), it computes the tail width as (width − tails × pin) / tails and lists every marking position. Fewer, wider tails read bold and rustic; more, narrower tails look refined and delicate.

Tips for clean joints

  • Mark from the same reference edge on both boards, and knife your lines rather than penciling them for a crisp shoulder.
  • Match finger width to a real cutter — a dado stack or straight bit you actually own — so the joint is easy to cut accurately.
  • Cut a test joint in scrap of the same thickness to dial in the fit before committing.
  • Number your corners so tails and pins go back together in the same orientation.
