Woodworking is great, but sometimes you need a custom bolt. Or a bushing. Or a lightsaber part. I bought a 7x14 Mini Metal Lathe on Amazon ($600). It is a "Chinese Mini Lathe" (CML)—sold under many brands (Vevor, Grizzly, warm-mart), but they are all made in the same factory.
The Arrival (Grease City)
It arrived in a wooden crate. It was covered in Cosmoline—a thick, red, sticky shipping grease applied to prevent rust during the ocean voyage.
- Step 1: Clean it. I spent 3 hours with WD-40, rags, and a toothbrush. I took the chuck apart. I took the cross slide off. I cleaned every gear.
- Step 2: Lubrication. I re-oiled everything with proper Way Oil (Mobil Vactra #2).
The Break-In
You can't just turn it on to max speed. The bearings need to seat. I ran it at low RPM for 20 mins, then medium, then high. The motor got warm, but smooth.
First Cut
I chucked up a piece of 1/2" aluminum rod. I ground a High Speed Steel (HSS) tool bit. I touched the metal. Ribbons of silver peeled off. It is immensely satisfying. It is smooth, quiet, and precise.
Conclusion
This is not an industrial machine. You can't take 5mm cuts in steel. But for making small bushings, spacers, and pins? It is perfect. It bridges the gap between "I need a part" and "I have to order it and wait a week."
