We wanted a nice L-shaped sectional for our patio. We looked at West Elm. $2,500. We looked at Wayfair. $1,200 (for flimsy metal).
I said, "I can build that."
Design Strategy
The expensive couches use Teak. I used Douglas Fir 2x4s. If you sand and stain cheap construction lumber properly, it looks like custom furniture.
- Key dimensions: The couch size was dictated by the Cushions.
- Pro Tip: Buy the cushions first. Building a custom frame to fit standard IKEA cushions ($50 each) is easy. Building custom cushions to fit a weird frame costs $500 in foam and sewing.
Contrast Design
Reference my Garden Bench project: I like the mix of wood and black. I decided to stain the frame a dark "Espresso" color, but use Cream White cushions. The contrast is sharp and modern.
The Build Process
Step 1: The Base Platform
I built two sturdy rectangles out of 2x6s.
- Legs: I used 4x4 posts for chunky, solid legs.
Step 2: The Slat Back
I didn't want a solid plywood back (it looks cheap). I ripped 2x4s into 1.5" square strips and spaced them out vertically. It gives it an airy, mid-century vibe.
Step 3: The Arm Rests
Wide armrests are crucial. You need a place to put your beer/wine. I used a 2x6 routed with a smooth round-over.
Step 4: Finishing (The Secret Sauce)
- Stain: Variable dark stain.
- Sealer: 4 coats of General Finishes Outdoor Oil. It penetrates and won't peel like paint.
Assembly
I brought the two sections to the patio and bolted them together. I placed the IKEA Duvholmen cushions on top. My wife added some throw pillows.
Conclusion
Total cost:
- Lumber: $100
- Finish/Screws: $30
- Cushions: $200
- Total: $330.
It looks identical to the $2,500 West Elm one. And because I built it with 2x6s, I can jump on it. (I did).
