Sometimes Amazon algorithms get weird. It suggested a set of 1/8" shank router bits that looked like they belonged in a dentist's office. They were $15 for a box of 10. Naturally, I bought them.
Are they trash? Will they explode? Or are they the secret weapon for fine detail work?
The Specs
- Shank: 1/8" (Dremel size). You need a collet adapter to run these in a standard trim router (usually 1/4").
- Profile: Some were spirals, some were tiny ball nose, some were engraving V-bits.
- Size: The cutting heads were microscopic. 0.5mm, 1mm, 1.5mm.
The Test: Walnut Inlay
I wanted to use them to sign my name in a Walnut box and maybe carve a small flower pattern.
Setup (Safety First!)
Small bits spin FAST. If they break, they become bullets.
- Eye Protection: Mandatory.
- Feed Rate: I turned the router speed up to max (30,000 RPM) because these small bits have low tip speed.
- Feed Speed: I moved the router VERY slowly.
Performance
I was shocked. They cut!
- The Engraver: The V-bit cut crisp, clean lines in the hardwood. No burning.
- The Spiral: I tried to cut a slot. It struggled. The bits are so thin they flex. If you push too hard, the bit bends, and your straight line becomes a squiggle.
The Failure Point
I got cocky. I tried to route a 1/4" deep slot in one pass. SNAP. The bit sheared off instantly. Lesson: Take shallow passes. Like, 1/32" deep passes. It is like shaving with a scalpel, not an axe.
Conclusion
For $15, these are incredible IF you use them right.
- Good for: Signatures, tiny inlays, PCB milling, jewelry box details.
- Bad for: Any structural cuts, deep grooves, or impatient people.
I keep them in my drawer for that one time a year I need to engrave a tiny date on a project. Worth the $15.
