I have a few drones (DJI Mavic, Mini, FPV). They were sitting in a pile of tangled cables and propellers on a desk. Drones look cool. They look like futuristic insects. They deserve to be displayed.
I decided to build a Hybrid Wall Organizer.
- Base: Wood (Warmth).
- Mounts: 3D Printed (Precision).
The Design
I wanted a vertical board that hangs on the wall. The drones would hang vertically, wings folded, ready to grab. The batteries and chargers would live on a shelf at the bottom.
Material & Tools
- Plywood: 1/2" Baltic Birch for the backboard.
- 3D Printer: To print the custom hooks.
- Router: To cut cable channels.
The Build Process
Step 1: The Backboard
I cut a piece of plywood 24" wide x 36" tall. I edge-banded the plywood with iron-on veneer to hide the layers. I stained it a light grey to make the white drones pop.
Step 2: 3D Printing Mounts
I designed hook brackets in Fusion 360.
- Shape: They cradle the drone body perfectly.
- Material: Printed in PETG (stronger than PLA).
- Color: Orange (for contrast).
Step 3: Cable Management (The Secret)
I didn't want messy wires.
- I laid out where the charger bricks would go.
- I used a router to cut channels in the back of the board.
- I buried the wires in the channels and hot-glued them in place.
- The only thing sticking out is the little charging plug.
Step 4: Assembly
I screwed the 3D printed mounts to the board. I added a small shelf at the bottom for the controllers and spare props.
Conclusion
It looks like an armory from a sci-fi movie.
- Grab and Go: I can see which batteries are charged (lights are visible).
- Safety: They are up high, away from the kids/cat.
- Aesthetic: It turns clutter into art.
