My DeWalt 734 Planer is the heaviest tool I own relative to its size. Moving it from the shelf to the workbench was a back injury waiting to happen. It needed its own wheels. But I refused to spend money on plywood for a shop cart. The Challenge: Build a functional cart using ONLY the offcuts in my scrap bin.
The Design
- Top: Needs to fit the planer footprint.
- Height: Needs to match my workbench height so it can act as an infeed/outfeed support.
- Storage: The hollow inside should hold the chip collection hood and extra blades.
Material (The Scrap Bin)
I found:
- A half-sheet of 3/4" CDX plywood (ugly).
- Some strips of 1/2" Baltic Birch.
- Random 2x4 chunks.
- 4 Casters salvaged from a broken dolly.
The Build Process
Step 1: The Frame
I used the 2x4s to build a simple box frame. It doesn't need to be pretty; it needs to be rigid. I used pocket screws to join the frame.
Step 2: The Frankenstein Skin
I didn't have pieces big enough to cover the sides.
- Patchwork: I pieced together the plywood scraps like a quilt.
- Glue & Brad Nails: I simply glued and nailed them to the frame.
- Strength: Surprisingly, this "shear wall" construction technique is incredibly strong.
Step 3: Mounting the Planer
I bolted the planer to the top using carriage bolts.
- Tip: Use nyloc nuts. Planers vibrate like crazy. Regular nuts will shake loose in 10 minutes.
Step 4: Dust Management
I added a dedicated hook on the side for the dust collection hose and a shelf underneath for the dust hood (which I remove when storing it against the wall).
Conclusion
It is the ugliest thing in my shop. It has 4 different colors of wood. It has screw holes from previous projects. But it works perfectly. I can roll the planer out, lock the wheels, plane my boards, and roll it back under the bench. Total Cost: $0.
