Yo, let me tell you about the pallet that almost ruined my month. Leaning against a brownstone stoop on a Sunday, free curb-side, solid as anything. My neighbor watches me drag it three blocks on a skateboard dolly and says, "Bro, you know that thing could be stamped with chemicals, right?" And I said the same thing every woodworker says: "Bro, it's free."

He wasn't wrong, though. Because here's the uncomfortable truth about salvage wood: almost everything you'd want to know about it is stuff you can't test for at home. But not everything. There are exactly two contaminants you can actually screen for before the wood hits a blade — lead paint and methyl bromide pallet treatment — and even those come with asterisks the size of a lumber yard.

So let's rank what the tests actually do, because I've seen too many guys swipe a swab and call a board clean.

The 1978 Line That Changes Everything

Start with lead. The federal government banned the sale of lead-based paint for residential use in 1978, and the EPA estimates about three-quarters of homes built before then still contain some of it — which is not the kind of odds I like.

For us, the risk isn't just sanding a painted door. It's that every piece of trim, siding, and window silt scrap floating around the salvage stream is suspect by default if it's painted and old. Lead dust from deteriorating paint — think friction surfaces like doors and window sills — is the primary exposure route, and a jointer or sander turns that problem into an airborne one real fast. The regulated threshold for what counts as "lead-based paint" is 1.0 mg/cm² or 0.5% by dry weight. Remember that number, because it's what the tests are actually judged against.

The Swab Problem — and Why the 64% Number Isn't What You Think

Here's the part that stings. The swab most DIYers trust — LeadCheck, the little bottle with the rhodazonate tip that turns pink or red when it hits lead — has a reputation problem, but not in the way a lot of articles claim.

A trained risk assessor ran 200 LeadCheck swab samples side by side with standard lab dust wipes, checking results against the EPA floor-dust hazard standard of 40 μg/ft². Result: a 64% false-negative rate. Sensitivity of 36%. The study, published in Environmental Research by Korfmacher and Dixon out of the University of Rochester and the National Center for Healthy Housing, put it plainly: LeadCheck swabs do not reliably detect lead in dust above 40 μg/ft² under field conditions.

But read the fine print, because I did, twice. That 64% is for dust. The swab was never designed to detect lead in dust — it was designed for lead in paint. The manufacturer's own QC pegged its chemical sensitivity at 2 micrograms of lead ion, and the maker claimed it detects 0.5% lead in paint with virtually 100% accuracy. Those are different jobs. Using a paint swab to check settled dust is like using a moisture meter to check your credit score. Wrong tool, wrong material, and the meter reading ruins the fantasy.

Also, that famous swab ran about $1.30 a pop in bulk back in the study's day. Current retail prices? Nobody's verified them lately, and I'm not going to make up a number. The "cheap and easy" part of the swab story was never really the problem anyway.

Ranking the Lead Tests, Worst to Best

Here's my honest ranking of what each option actually detects, based on what the EPA and that study say.

Swabs for dust: does not work. 64% false-negative rate against lab wipes. Full stop. Don't swipe a window sill and call the room safe for kids.

EPA-recognized swabs for paint on wood: legit for one narrow job. EPA recognizes exactly three kits for the "negative response" criterion of its Renovation, Repair and Painting rule: LeadCheck (wood, ferrous metal, drywall, plaster), D-Lead (same list), and the State of Massachusetts kit — which is drywall and plaster only, not wood, so skip it for our purposes. Here's the catch that matters: no kit has ever met both the negative and positive response criteria of the rule. A negative result from a recognized kit means you can rule regulated lead paint out. It does not quantify anything. And the recognition standard is strict — for paint at or above 1.0 mg/cm², a false negative can occur no more than 5% of the time at 95% confidence. Just keep it on listed substrates; kits can't be used at all on stuff like stucco or non-ferrous metal.

Lab dust wipes: the gold standard for dust. That's what the swab study measured against. Lab fees ran around $7 per sample, roughly $60 per house, with full risk assessments at $300 to $600 per house in that study. For a woodworking shop decision? Overkill. For "is my kid's playroom window safe?"? Worth every penny.

Paint-chip lab analysis and XRF: the accurate options for paint. EPA lists sending a paint chip to a National Lead Laboratory Accreditation Program certified lab, or hiring a certified inspector or risk assessor with an XRF gun, as the go-to options when you need real numbers against that 1.0 mg/cm² threshold. For a salvaged door you're itching to flatten on the jointer, a chip in an envelope is a reasonable weekend's delay.

One more wrinkle: under the RRP rule, paid renovators don't have to test at all — they can just assume lead is present in any pre-1978 home and work lead-safe. Which honestly tells you something. The pros treat "assume it's lead" as a legitimate strategy, and EPA publishes DIY lead-safe work practices for homeowners doing their own pre-1978 work — look those up and follow them rather than trusting a stranger's version. For a free piece of painted trim, "assume lead until a test says otherwise" costs nothing.

Now the Pallet Stamp, Which People Read Backwards

Flip that pallet over. If it's got the ISPM 15 mark — the IPPC logo, a two-letter country code, a unique facility number, and a treatment code — you're reading its passport. The treatment code is the part that matters: HT for heat treatment, which means a minimum core temperature of 56°C sustained for 30 minutes, or MB for methyl bromide fumigation.

Methyl bromide is an odorless, colorless gas. The US phased out its production and import on January 1, 2005 — but with exemptions for critical uses and quarantine-and-preshipment treatments, so MB-fumigated wood packaging is still legal for international shipment and still shows up in the pallet stream, because some regions still fumigate with it under that exemption. High-level exposure can cause central nervous system and respiratory system failure, and it's most dangerous at the fumigation site, where applicators inhale the gas.

Here's my read, and the trade's own read, which conflicts: UK trade sources, citing PalletLink, say residual emissions from MB pallets in general circulation are "likely to be insignificant," while other pallet-safety sources flatly say MB pallets are not safe and tell you never to use them for projects or burn them. I've never seen a lab number for what's actually left in the wood, so both positions are judgment calls. Mine: there are enough pallets in this city that I don't need the MB one. Pass.

But here's the mistake I see constantly — the inverse inference. "No MB stamp, so it's clean." Nope. A pallet with no ISPM 15 mark is a domestic "national" pallet, which was never required to be treated or marked. That stamp tells you nothing either way. And neither HT nor absence of MB says one word about what got spilled on that pallet while it was hauling stuff around. Standing advice from the pallet-safety world: refuse any pallet with visible oil, food, or unknown spills, because these things transport dangerous chemicals and liquids all the time. That kind of contamination is exactly the stuff no test kit in this article screens for.

What I Actually Do Now

So the rank order, shop-flavor version. Lead swab on pre-1978 paint, before the board gets near the saw — recognized, strict standard, fine for paint, useless for dust. Dust concerns? Lab wipes at $7 a sample, not swabs. Pallets? Read the stamp, respect the MB, and remember that no stamp is not a clearance.

And for everything else a salvage find might carry — spills, who knows what — the test is your eyes and your gut. My rule now: painted and old, assume lead until a test says otherwise. Stamped MB, walk away. Stained, oily, or just smelling wrong, walk away faster. Free wood costs exactly what it should until you have to pay for the mistake.
