Here's the trap buried in every mattress warranty I read for this piece. The same paragraph that promises to replace a sagging mattress lets the company walk away if your bed frame caused the sag. Nectar covers an indentation over 1.5 inches "that is not associated with an indentation or sag which results from use of an improper or unsupportive foundation or bed base." Casper's clause is built the same way. Your frame isn't a compliance box. It's the first thing that gets blamed.

So I read the published terms from the major brands, because the forums are worse than useless here. Builders mostly land on three inches and reassure each other it's fine. And that number is in almost nobody's warranty.

The Gap Number Everybody Gets Wrong

There is no standard here. ASTM F1566-14(2021) is the only mattress test standard in the neighborhood, and ASTM states its data is "for comparative analysis with no pass/fail criteria applicable." It sets nothing for bed frames. No building code covers slats and no federal rule does, so the only enforceable numbers are private warranty terms — which is why they disagree by nearly a factor of three.

Serta Simmons Bedding is the binding constraint, and the language is not subtle: an open slatted system with spaces "greater than 2 inches (5 centimeters), without the addition of a solid platform, will damage your mattress and void your warranty." Beautyrest and Simmons publish the same rule. Brooklyn Bedding sits at the other end, telling you slats over 5 inches apart "will be considered improper and will void the Limited Lifetime Warranty." Leesa allows 5.5 inches for adults, 9 for Leesa Kids; Bear runs identical language with Bear Cub swapped in. One correction, because secondary sites keep botching it: Purple's own warranty says 3.5 inches, not 2.75.

The practical read: build to 2 inches and you satisfy every brand in that table. Build to 3, where most forum advice and most mass-market frames land, and you clear Tempur-Pedic, Sealy, Stearns & Foster, Saatva, Purple, Avocado, Brooklyn Bedding, Leesa, Bear and Tuft & Needle while failing Serta, Beautyrest, Simmons and Amerisleep. You don't know what mattress you'll own in six years. Do it once.

Check that against what's sold. Zinus is unusually honest and publishes spacing per model: the Moiz Deluxe runs 3.1 inches on Full, 3.5 on Queen and King. That Queen sits exactly at Purple's limit, inside Tempur-Pedic's, outside Serta's, Beautyrest's, Simmons's and Amerisleep's. A frame marketed as needing no box spring already fails several major mattress warranties in the box.

Queen Is the Line, Not Full

You'll hear that a center rail is required from Full up. Not per the documents. Every brand that names a size threshold puts it at Queen, and explicitly blesses four legs and no center support for Twin and Full.

Tempur-Pedic requires a center support and "at least 5-6 legs for Queen, King and Cal King, and 4 legs for Twin and Full mattresses." Sealy wants 5 legs at Queen and up "with one leg serving as a center rigid support." Purple, Avocado and Eight Sleep run near-identical boilerplate. Saatva states its warranty "requires that frames for Queen and larger size mattresses have at least one center leg."

Serta, Beautyrest and Simmons give the only spec you can take straight to the lumber pile: for any queen or king frame without a metal center support, "use at least 5 hardwood or metal slats (1" x 4") and add legs to the 3 center slats." That's the one place in this survey where a mattress company names stock by nominal dimension, and the only one that tells you which slats get legs. Stearns & Foster's alternative is a rigid bridge bar with at least 5 support legs, or 5 equally spaced hardwood cross-slats with a supporting center leg.

Width They Spell Out. Thickness Is Your Problem.

Tempur-Pedic, Sealy and Stearns & Foster all require cross slats "at least 3 inches wide and no more than 4 inches apart." Avocado sets a 2.5-inch minimum width. Leesa adds that slats must be "the same width, flat, and spaced equidistant," and voids coverage for bowed, curved or flexible slats.

Serta's "1x4" implies 3/4 inch actual, and that's an inference, not a rule. So the warranty hands you the gap and the width, then goes quiet on the thing that actually decides whether your mattress dents. That's span, and span is wood, not paperwork.

The Cube Law Does the Rest

The governing equation is in the USDA Forest Products Laboratory's Wood Handbook (FPL-GTR-282), Chapter 9. For a uniformly distributed load on a simply supported beam, Table 9-1 gives k_b = 5/384, with I = bh³/12. Strip out the algebra and you get the sentence that runs this whole article: deflection scales with the cube of the span and the cube of the thickness. Halve the span, deflection drops to one-eighth. Go from 3/4 inch thick to 1-1/16, and it drops to about a third.

Everything below is my arithmetic off Equation 9-2, not a published figure, and it assumes 50 pounds on one slat — my conservative stand-in for a heavier adult's torso landing across three or four slats, or somebody sitting on the edge. That load figure isn't sourced, so treat it as an assumption.

A 1x4 pine slat spanning a Queen unsupported at 60 inches deflects 0.92 inch. A King at 76 inches: 1.87. Put a center rail under it so each half spans 30 inches and the same board deflects 0.12. That's the cube law, and it's the engineering reason the warranties demand a center leg at Queen and up. The lawyers and the wood agree for once.

Max span for 1/8 inch of deflection at 50 pounds, my calculation, using Wood Handbook stiffness values:

Poplar is genuinely stiffer than white pine — 1.58 million psi against 1.24 in the Wood Handbook's clear-wood values, about 27 percent — so spending up buys real stiffness, not a feeling. It's still short of loblolly at 1.79 million. And those are small-clear laboratory specimens; graded lumber with knots delivers less. The Southern Forest Products Association's design values for No. 2 Southern Pine, 2 to 4 inches wide, are E 1,400,000 psi and Fb 1,100 psi.

Buy by actual thickness, too. Per Capitol City Lumber, 5/4 hardwood surfaced two sides is 1-1/16 inch, not 1-1/4 — worth about 30 percent of your deflection. A softwood 1x4 is 3/4 by 3-1/2.

Slats fail by sagging, not snapping. At these spans, bending stress in a 3/4 x 3-1/2 pine slat runs a few hundred psi, nowhere near that 1,100 psi Fb. Stiffness governs, so a stronger board of the same thickness buys you nothing. For a sanity check on those spans: cabinetmakers on WoodWeb cap 3/4-inch shelf spans at 24 to 36 inches, which brackets the table from the outside.

They Can't Sell You a Foundation. They Can Blame Yours.

Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act as the FTC interprets it at 16 CFR 700.10(a), a warrantor may not condition coverage "on the consumer's use of an article or service identified by brand, trade, or corporate name unless that article or service is provided without charge." Buy-our-foundation-or-else is not enforceable.

Read the next clause, though. The same section does not preclude a warrantor "from denying liability where the warrantor can demonstrate that the defect or damage was so caused." That's the whole game, and it's why every requirement above is written as a performance spec — gap, width, leg count — instead of a brand name. Avocado says the quiet part out loud: its requirements apply whether you use an Avocado foundation or a third-party frame.

It cuts in your favor too. Hit the published numbers on a shop-built frame and you have a real defense, not a courtesy. Miss them and Tempur-Pedic says an inappropriate base voids the limited warranty "and all other warranties whether express or implied," implied merchantability included. Sealy reserves the right to deny a claim "if the foundation is inadequate."

One live conflict: Serta's fix for wide gaps is hardboard, plywood or particleboard over the slats. Tempur-Pedic lists plywood and bunkie boards among inadequate bases. Two majors, opposite advice. Build to the spacing and you never pick a side. And if a Saatva Zenhaven is going on it, don't — Saatva requires that latex mattress on a flat, solid surface.

What I'd Build

Two-inch gaps. 1x4 poplar or Southern yellow pine, flat and equidistant, square stock — not rounded bars, which Tempur-Pedic, Sealy and Stearns & Foster all say need a foundation over them anyway. A center rail with legs on anything Queen or larger, no exceptions, and if you're following Serta's spec, legs under the three center slats. Keep every slat's clear span under 32 inches and the arithmetic stops mattering.

A few more boards and one more rail. Skip it and you find out in August, when the thing you spent a weekend on has a dent in it and a claims form is asking you to describe your bed frame. Build it right in spring and it's still right when football season starts.
