Yo, let me tell you about the two most confident guys on the internet. Both cut melamine. And they'll tell you the opposite thing with the same straight face.

Guy one lives on WoodWeb's knowledge base. He runs Hi-ATB blades, and he admits right in the thread that his FS Tool 80T "worked excellently initially but required sharpening after 10–20 sheets." Guy two is over on SawdustZone, screen name Mr. Bill, and he's done with the whole category: "I have used dedicated melamine blades with lots of little teeth and a much higher price that worked well but not for that long." Same thread, a blade nerd called knottscott says the best blades for chipout have "a Hi-ATB grind combined with a high tooth count."

I care because my shop is a second bedroom in Brooklyn, my table saw shares a wall with a guy who works nights, and a 3/4" sheet of white melamine runs $44 at Supply-OnTime. A Forrest Duraline for cutting it starts at $327. That's more than seven sheets of material for one blade. So what does the grind actually buy me, and does a piece of scrap plus a second pass get me most of the way there?

Both Camps Are Right

Here's what the forums never say out loud: nobody's contradicting anybody.

Every tooling reference I could find agrees on the direction of the trade. Toolstoday says Hi-ATB gives "superb edge quality" but "dulls faster; reserve for fine work," while TCG "resists chipping and heat wear." Fine Homebuilding says the TCG's slower cut "keeps the blade cooler so that it lasts longer." Not one of them puts a number on it. Nobody I found ran both grinds through the same stack and counted.

The physics comes from Woodshop News, quoting Carbide Processors president Tom Walz: carbide is a hardness-versus-toughness compromise. Harder carbide takes a sharper edge but chips more easily, so industry ends up "accepting duller edges for longer intervals between sharpening." A Hi-ATB tooth is ground to a fine point. A TCG tooth isn't. Guess which one pays first.

So: Hi-ATB wins on the bottom face of the cut. TCG wins on how many sheets you get before the blade goes out for sharpening. The WoodWeb slider guys expect to resharpen a main blade after "about 20 sheets," and one says an 80T TCG cuts melamine "chip-free within acceptable limits" with no scoring blade at all. Both camps are right. They just want different things.

"Hi-ATB" Means Whatever the Manufacturer Says It Means

This part made me laugh on the train. The references give you a range: Toolstoday says roughly 30–40°, Key Blades says 30–40°, Fine Homebuilding says 30° to 38°.

Now look at what's actually sold under the label, from retailer spec sheets. Amana's MB10800 is 25°. FS Tool's SM6251 is 30°. CMT's 210.080.10 and the Forrest Duraline are 40°. Freud doesn't publish one for the LU79R010. So a "Hi-ATB" runs from 25° to 40°, and Freud's budget option in the category won't tell you. When two forum guys argue about how fast Hi-ATB dulls, there's a decent chance they aren't even holding the same geometry.

Read the Hook Angle, Not the Marketing

Here's the 10", 80-tooth field, prices pulled August 27 with the retailer named, because the same SKU moved as much as $52 between stores.

First, the Popular Tools pair is the cleanest comparison on the list: same maker, same tooth count, same −5° hook, same .126/.087 plate. The TCG costs $19 more. That's the market's own price tag on the durability story.

Second, the hook column. The blades marketed as double-sided melamine blades cluster at negative or near-zero hook: Freud's TCG at −3°, Amana at −6°, FS Tool at 0 to −6°, Popular Tools at −5°, Oshlun negative. The plywood-first Hi-ATBs run slightly positive: Freud LU79 at +2°, CMT and Forrest at +5°. Rockler's blade guide explains why: low or negative hook "inhibits excessive feed rates, ideal for crosscutting to achieve smoother results." The Diablo at +15° is the outlier. Its Amazon listing pitches it first as a fine-finish crosscut blade for hard and softwoods, and the Woodsmith Store copy adds chip-free melamine on top. Cheapest blade on the list, most aggressive hook. Not a coincidence.

Freud even signals the split inside its own line. Retailer copy calls the TCG LU97R010's carbide a "Laminate Blend" and the Hi-ATB LU79R010's a "Crosscutting Blend." Different carbide for different grinds, composition unpublished.

Don't try to rank the carbide names either. Forrest's "C-4 submicron," Oshlun's "C-4," CMT's "micrograin" and FS Tool's "XL4000" don't sit on one scale. Carbide Processors' blog says C-grades are defined by function, C-1 roughing through C-4 precision, not composition. Woodshop News counts over 5,000 grades under 1,500-plus trade names with "no comprehensive comparison" between suppliers. Everything past the hook angle is a name.

Blade Height Is a Live Argument

I wish I could hand you a number. The sources won't let me.

Bob Vila says set the blade just above the gullets. A Delta manual quoted on WoodWeb says about 1/8" above the work. Then a 28-year pro in the same thread says at least 5/8" should project so material can't ride up the blade, another says "melamine usually cuts better with the blade an inch or so above the surface," and a pro in the chip-out thread lands on "about 5/8" above the top of the melamine panel."

The mechanism, from that WoodWeb height thread, is the useful part. Tooth tips control entry and exit, and exit is the visible problem. A low blade means the teeth leave the bottom face at a flat angle, which favors the top and punishes the bottom. A high blade drives the teeth down more steeply: cleaner bottom exit, more risk on top, and a lot more blade sticking up. Which face is your show face decides where you set it. And feed slow. WoodWeb's chip-out thread says "the slower the feed, the better the cut" on the bottom edge.

The Scrap-and-Two-Passes Method, Costed

Now the version for people with no truck and one saw.

Step one is a zero-clearance insert. Infinity Tools' Betterly listing spells out why: the gap in a standard throat plate lets workpieces "chip on the underside," and supporting material right up to the blade "dramatically reduces unsightly tearout and chipping." Rockler's phenolic ZCI is $34.99. Mine is a scrap of whatever was leaning against the wall, so call it $0. Fair warning from the WoodWeb chip-out thread: the original poster found the improvement "limited without other adjustments," meaning blade and height. The insert is the floor, not the ceiling.

Step two is a scoring pass. One WoodWeb pro raises the blade "about 2–3 mm" and scores every cut first, then comes back through at full depth. Bob Vila calls for a first pass 1/4" deep, and a Curbly commenter does the same, then raises the blade an inch for the through cut. Another WoodWeb pro says it's less effective than a slider's scoring unit. Sure. I don't have a slider. I have a second bedroom.

Here's my arithmetic from those prices. Take the 20-sheets-per-sharpening figure the slider pros quote, with the caveat that the 10–20 number came from one shop's Hi-ATB and nobody has tested TCG the same way. On the first edge:

  • Diablo at $60.15: about $3.01 per sheet
  • Freud LU79R010 at $69.99: about $3.50 per sheet
  • Freud LU97R010 at $94.99: about $4.75 per sheet
  • Forrest at $327: about $16.35 per sheet

Against a $44 sheet of melamine, the cheap Hi-ATBs cost roughly 7–8% of the material per sheet cut. The Forrest costs about 35%. Against $99.12 prefinished maple at Berta Store, the cheap blades drop to 3–4%.

After the first edge, the number gets friendlier. Ridge Carbide sharpens a 61–80T blade for $26 plus $13 return shipping on the first blade, so a cycle is about $39, or roughly $1.95 per sheet over 20 sheets. Central Saw Works is $31.75 for 80–89T.

And the $34.99 Rockler insert? It pays for itself against the cheapest dedicated blade after one sheet. What it costs you is a second pass on every single cut, and in an apartment, every pass is more noise through the wall.

What I'd Actually Buy

If you cut melamine a few times a year, get a Hi-ATB in the $60–80 range, meaning the Diablo, the Oshlun or the Freud LU79R010, and run it with a zero-clearance insert and a scoring pass.

If melamine is a regular thing, step up to the $95–125 tier, where the choice is finally about the grind: Freud's LU97R010 TCG for life, or a negative-hook Hi-ATB like the Popular Tools LM1080 or Amana MB10800 for the edge. Budget the $26–32 resharpen either way, because it's coming. Production shops already know about Forrest and FS Tool, and they aren't reading a Brooklyn guy's blog for blade advice.

For me, it's the scrap insert, two passes, and the cheapest Hi-ATB that fits the saw. Not because it's the best cut. Because it's the best cut per dollar in a shop where the dollar and the square foot are both already spoken for.
