We've all been there. You build the bathroom vanity, band the plywood edges so it reads as furniture instead of shelving, and for a year it's what you point at when somebody compliments the bathroom. Then one morning the bottom corner of a door has a lip you can catch with a fingernail. The tape stands proud of the panel, there's a dark line under it, and the corner feels puffy.

The surprising part, once I went looking for the mechanism, is that it's almost never the glue letting go from heat. It's the panel underneath getting fatter than the strip of tape stuck to it. The decision that saves your vanity is partly the roll you buy and mostly the sheet goods you built it out of.

Two of These Names Describe the Face, One Describes the Glue

"Iron-on melamine, pre-glued PVC, peel-and-stick" sounds like three parallel choices. It isn't. Two of those names describe the face material and one describes the adhesive, which is why the comparison feels slippery.

Melamine band is printed paper impregnated with thermosetting resin, and Cantisa, a Spanish edgeband maker, splits it into two grades that behave nothing alike. Single-layer melamine is 170 to 200 g/m² at roughly 0.3 mm, and Cantisa calls it hygroscopic: it absorbs moisture easily and goes soft in humid conditions. Three-layer melamine is 0.30 to 0.33 mm, sealed during melaminization and humidity-resistant, but rigid and prone to cracking if something hits it later. No consumer roll I've seen tells you which one is on the spool.

PVC is a thermoplastic: TECE Dekor's technical sheet for pre-glued PVC lists 0.40 mm thickness, Shore D hardness of 81 plus or minus 3, and chemical resistance rated "Very Good." PSA isn't a face at all, it's pressure-sensitive adhesive, sold under both PVC and real wood veneer. Rockler's is hardwood veneer on 3M adhesive; FastCap's FastEdge PVC is listed by Würth Louis and Company at 0.018 inch, the same thickness class as the ironed stuff.

What It Actually Costs You Per Foot

Prices read on 25 August 2026, from Rockler except where noted. The per-foot column is my own division, not the retailer's number.

Same store, same species, same wood face: peel-and-stick birch costs 80 percent more per foot than hot-melt birch. That premium buys you nothing but skipping the iron.

Then there's roll size. Rockler's maple is $0.40 a foot in a 25 foot roll and $0.15 in the 250, a 2.7 times reduction; ten small rolls run $99.90 against $36.99 for the big one. With three projects half-finished on the bench, which is my normal state of affairs, the bulk roll pays for itself before you finish the second one.

The Trimmer Trap Worth Ten Minutes of Your Time

Three hand trimmers cover most home shops, and their capacities differ. The FastCap Quad Trimmer (Q.TRIM) is $23.99 at Woodcraft, down from $29.99, rated for banding up to 1 mm thick and 54 mm wide, and it does both sides in one pass. The Rockler 2-in-1 (item 67555) is $29.99 and stops at 0.025 inch of banding, which is 0.635 mm. The Virutex AU93 is $21.30 and maxes out at 0.6 mm for manual use, 40 mm wide.

Now hold those against the tape. Rockler's hot-melt veneer is 0.3556 mm, inside all three. Rockler's own peel-and-stick veneer is 0.7874 mm, about 2.2 times thicker because the adhesive layer adds bulk, which puts it over both the Rockler trimmer's rating and the Virutex. Buy Rockler's PSA banding and Rockler's trimmer in the same cart and you're out of spec. The 1 mm PVC professionals like for wet rooms only fits the FastCap.

Iron Settings, and Why Hot Air Genuinely Wins

Veneer and PVC don't want the same iron, and I spent years not knowing that. For pre-glued veneer, LEDGEBAND specifies a dry iron on cotton, no steam, roughly 325 to 375 °F, in 4 to 6 inch sections, each set with a wood block. Woodshop Diaries picks band no more than 1/16 inch wider than the panel, which cuts the trimming.

PVC is a different animal. TECE calls for a minimum of 120 to 130 °C, the iron in the wool/silk/cotton range, held 2 to 5 seconds, with paper protecting the soleplate. Cut the band 3 cm long, press with a block while it's hot, and let it cool completely before trimming. Too hot or too long, TECE warns, and "you will deform the product." Here's the reasoning that made it click: Rowenta lists heavy cotton at 375 to 400 °F, while that PVC band's Vicat B50 softening point is 80 plus or minus 2 °C, or 176 °F. Softening under load isn't melting under paper for two seconds, but the gap is why the "you can't iron PVC" folklore persists. Work at the bottom of the dial, with a slip sheet.

Hot air wins for a reason a Festool Owners Group member put better than I could: hot-air banders "heat the glue from the glue side, so do a better job." Another warned that with 1 mm banding you risk scorching the face before the glue melts. The realistic upgrade is Virutex's AG98F hot-air bander, 1,500 W, tape 0.4 to 1 mm and up to 50 mm wide, $545.10 at Pro Cabinet Supply.

Two free habits, from Helmitin's data sheet for its EVA edgebanding hot melt. Let panel and banding sit together at least 48 hours at around 72 °F and 45 to 55 percent relative humidity, away from cold drafts. And don't sand the edge first: Helmitin says sanding is to be avoided because dust clogs the surface and blocks adhesive penetration, and if you must, use 60 grit or coarser. Most of us sand to 220 before banding, which is exactly backwards.

Why the Cheap Roll Lifts in a Bathroom

The failure is a chain, and only one link is the one everybody blames.

The glue isn't melting. Jowat's Jowatherm 282.20 EVA softens at about 90 °C, 194 °F; Helmitin's HELMITHERM 497 at 114 plus or minus 7 °C. No bathroom does that.

There's very little glue on the tape. TECE puts pre-glued PVC at approximately 130 grams of hot melt per square metre of band, which on a 7/8 inch band is about 0.87 grams per linear foot by my arithmetic. Helmitin's machine spec is 1.25 to 2.8 grams per linear foot per inch of edge thickness, roughly 0.94 grams at the low end for a 3/4 inch edge. Pre-glued tape starts at or below a machine's thinnest bead. WoodWeb contributors report what you'd expect: it does poorly on particleboard while MDF and veneer-core plywood take it well, because a glue pot lays down enough adhesive to bridge a coarse, porous edge.

The face may be drinking. Back to Cantisa: single-layer melamine absorbs moisture and goes soft in humid air. PVC, at 0.40 mm and Shore D 81, does not.

And the panel swells. This is the link that shears the joint. ANSI A208.1-2016 specifies no thickness-swell limit at all for ordinary particleboard grades. You have to ask for a moisture-resistant grade, MR10 or MR50, to get one, and even then the ceiling is 5.5 percent thickness swell after a 24-hour submersion. Run that: 5.5 percent of a 3/4 inch panel is 0.041 inch, about a nickel's thickness, developing right at the glue line under a 0.4 mm strip.

The USDA Forest Products Laboratory's Wood Handbook says plywood shows "minimal edge-swelling" and that "unlike most panels fabricated from particles, it undergoes minimal irreversible thickness swelling if wetted," and notes that the wax emulsions in particle-based panels give only "limited-term water resistance." A 0.4 mm band on plywood and the same band on standard particleboard are not the same product.

What I'd Put on a Vanity

The industry already told us the seam is the weak point, in writing. ANSI/KCMA A161.1-2022, the performance standard for kitchen and vanity cabinets, includes a test whose stated purpose is "to test the door edge for proper application of the finish or edge treatment." A door stands on a #8 cellulose sponge soaked in 0.5 percent dishwashing detergent solution, and the requirement is no delamination and no swelling. A door with no splices or seams sits there 24 hours. An edgebanded door sits 4. A wet towel left over a vanity door edge overnight has beaten the certification test by six times.

Ranked for a bathroom, from what I'd trust most:

  1. Veneer-core or hardwood plywood with 1 mm PVC, applied with hot air rather than an iron. WoodWeb professionals prefer it, one of them having run over 500,000 feet.
  2. Plywood with 0.4 mm pre-glued PVC, ironed carefully at the bottom of the dial.
  3. Plywood with PSA PVC.
  4. Any of the above on standard particleboard or melamine board.
  5. Melamine paper band on anything, which on particleboard in a bathroom is the recipe for the corner you already recognize.

On peel-and-stick, be blunt about what we don't know. Rockler calls its 3M adhesive a permanent bond and FastCap sells Ultra Bond, but neither publishes a temperature range, a humidity rating, or a wet-exposure test on any page I can point you to. Unproven isn't the same as bad, but on a vanity edge I treat unproven as unproven. Save the PSA for the maple coasters and the cherry keepsake box, where it's lovely and saves you an evening.

Then do the free thing. Per the Building America Solution Center, ASHRAE 62.2 and the 2021 IRC require at least 50 cfm of intermittent bathroom exhaust, and the fan should run a full hour after a shower. A timer switch will hold that hour for you.
