Two stacks of 2x4s on the treated rack. Same wet heft, same smell, same splinters. One stack is right for deck boards. The other is the only one that belongs in the bench you're framing around the kids' sandbox: legs buried in sand, a sprinkler soaking it three nights a week, the Texas sun working on it the rest of the time. The only way to tell the stacks apart is the tag stapled to the end of every board. Most people rip it off and toss it before the first cut.

Don't. That tag is the entire spec sheet and the claim ticket for the warranty everyone assumes they have. Buy from the wrong stack and you haven't just shortened the bench's life. You've voided coverage on it, and maybe on the boards next to it you bought right.

Five Lines of Truth

The American Wood Protection Association, whose U1 standard governs residential treated lumber, breaks the tag into five decodable pieces in its homeowner infographic: the treater's brand or logo; an exposure statement in large type, like ABOVE GROUND; the standard line, like "AWPA U1, UC3B," which names the Use Category; the preservative abbreviation, like CA-C or MCA; and the retention, like ".06 pcf." The tag also carries the treating company's name and town, plus the mark of an inspection agency accredited by the American Lumber Standard Committee, usually inside a checkmark.

That agency mark isn't decoration. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory says oversight by ALSC-accredited third-party inspectors beats a treating plant vouching for its own product, and building codes may require third-party-certified wood outright. I don't take a 2x4's word for anything.

Three Categories, One Backyard

The Use Category number scales with hazard: smaller number, less protection required, per the Western Wood Preservers Institute's specifier guide. Three categories cover nearly everything behind your fence.

UC3B is above ground, exposed. Exterior wood that never touches dirt, uncoated or draining badly, but with enough airflow to dry back out. Decking, railings, fence pickets.

UC4A is ground contact, general use. Wood touching ground or fresh water. Fence posts, deck posts, ledgers, garden boxes, landscape walls.

UC4B is ground contact, heavy duty. Severe environments, horticultural sites, climates with high rot potential, critically important members. Permanent wood foundations, building poles.

The AWPA's application map matches: deck boards and railings UC3B or higher; ledgers, posts, planter boxes, and landscape walls UC4A or higher; permanent wood foundations UC4B. Joists, beams, and stairs are UC3B in the air but UC4A the moment they touch ground.

"Above Ground" Is a Condition, Not a Height

Here's the part that wrecks backyard builds: getting wood off the dirt doesn't make it "above ground" in the standard's eyes. AWPA-derived guidance published by WWPI lists six conditions that force UC4A treatment for above-ground parts: soil, vegetation, or debris can build up and stay against the wood; the construction blocks air from circulating underneath and between boards; the part sits less than 6 inches above final grade on permeable supports like concrete or treated wood; it touches non-durable untreated wood, or older construction with any evidence of decay; it gets wet on a frequent basis, a watering system included; or it lives in a tropical climate.

Run the sandbox bench through that list. Sand piled against the legs is condition one. A low seat with no airflow underneath is condition two. Legs a few inches off grade on pavers is condition three. Kids running the hose all June is condition five. The AWPA has no "sandbox bench" line item, and it doesn't need one. Four of six conditions say ground contact, and one is enough.

The mechanism is moisture, and it doesn't negotiate. The Forest Products Laboratory says decay fungi need at least 20% wood moisture content to grow and over 29% for spores to germinate, and ground contact supplies that even in dry climates. Wood resting on concrete or masonry near grade can wick enough moisture to rot without a drop of rain. FPL also states the stakes flatly: treated wood serves for decades in structural roles where premature failure can mean injury or death.

Plenty of builders missed the memo. In February 2016, per YellaWood's compliance page, the AWPA revised UC4A to require ground-contact treatment for applications previously approved as above-ground, deck joists and beams included; the change flows into code because the ICC-ES report requires treated wood to follow AWPA U1. One more trap, from the AWPA's homeowner page: lumber 2 inches thick or less may only be treated for above-ground use. The thin stock, exactly what you'd grab for a bench seat, is the most likely to be UC3B.

Point-Oh-Six Versus Point-One-Five

Retention is pounds of preservative per cubic foot, measured in an assay zone, not through the whole board. On Southern Pine under 2 inches thick, FPL says inspectors bore the outer 0.6 inch of at least 20 boards per treating charge and average the borings; the tag is a charge average, and your individual board can run higher or lower.

The AWPA's homeowner table gives the Southern Pine numbers in pcf:

For copper azole, the CA-C and MCA rows, ground contact carries two and a half times the preservative of above-ground stock, and heavy duty carries roughly five times. That's the difference those identical-looking stacks are hiding.

Now look at the dashes. EL2, sold at retail as Ecolife and Severe Weather MAX per WWPI, and PTI, sold as Wolmanized EraWood, have no ground-contact retention listed at all. FPL confirms both are standardized for above-ground use only. A board can be legitimately pressure-treated and still be categorically wrong for a post or a planter. Wrong chemistry is wrong chemistry, no matter how much of it you buy.

It's stamped on real stock, too. McCoy's Building Supply in San Marcos, checked this August, sells above-ground No. 1 2x4s tagged MCA .06 at $4.89 for an eight-footer, ground-contact 4x4x14s tagged MCA .15 at $21.99, and No. 2 ground-contact 4x4x8s at $10.49. The tags match the AWPA table digit for digit. One wrinkle: their ground-contact 2x4x16 was call-for-price with zero in stock while the above-ground version sat 792 sticks deep. One store, not the market, but check availability before designing around ground-contact dimensional stock.

The Chemistry Line and the Kid Question

The abbreviations decode fast. CA-C is copper azole. MCA is the same chemistry with the copper ground to fine particles instead of dissolved; it's what MicroPro and YellaWood run. ACQ pairs copper with a quaternary ammonium compound. Every row above the dashes is a copper formulation. The arsenic-bearing formula you remember, CCA, left the homeowner market in December 2003, per EPA, which also says existing CCA structures don't need to come out.

I won't put a chemical near my family without reading up, so here's the reading. University of Maryland Extension says today's MCA contains no arsenic, does contain copper, and is considered low in toxicity. It cites Oregon State research on treated raised beds: soil copper rose a minor amount, only within 1 inch of the bed edge, and the plants showed no increase in copper at all. Koppers lists playsets among MicroPro's ground-contact end uses. Still cautious? UMD suggests paint, stain, or a heavy plastic liner between wood and soil. That bar clears for my backyard.

The Warranty You Already Threw Away

Get the relationship straight first: ProWood's Lifetime Limited Warranty is a Universal Forest Products document, the treater's paper, not the store's, hosted on Home Depot's server, and it is blunt. Coverage is replacement or refund up to the purchase price for wood that structurally fails from rot, fungal decay, or termites. First owner only, not transferable, no labor or removal costs, and fastener corrosion is excluded entirely.

Then the kill clause, quoted straight: the warrantor "expressly disclaims any warranty coverage for Above Ground Products used in Ground Contact applications." The document goes on to disclaim above-ground product in a list that mirrors the AWPA's six conditions nearly word for word: under 6 inches on permeable supports, blocked airflow, debris buildup, frequent wetting, contact with decayed wood, critical hard-to-replace members. The UC3B sandbox bench fails that list four ways before the first kid sits down.

It gets meaner. A contamination clause disclaims projects where misused above-ground wood touches correctly specified wood, because the misuse simulates ground-contact conditions for its neighbors. Buy nine boards right and one wrong, and the one can void the nine. Rip a board lengthwise and coverage is gone. And the claim mechanics are the punchline: ProWood wants original receipts plus an end tag from each piece of damaged wood. The tag you tossed on day one is the claim ticket.

YellaWood's structure is similar, tiered from a lifetime general-use warranty down to 15 years on fence boards, and its FAQ carries my favorite trap in the subject: landscape timbers, the cheap impulse buy by the register, aren't treated for ground contact and carry no warranty as fence posts. That's by design.

So here's the play. Field-treat every cut end and drilled hole; FPL says copper naphthenate is often recommended for the job. Then staple every end tag to its receipt and stick them in a drawer.
