The maple offcuts stacked by my bench have gone the color of weak tea over a wet Vermont July, and on the first cool morning of August I put a chisel into one just to hear it. Hard maple answers a mallet differently than pine does. There is a tock rather than a thud, and if the edge is right the waste comes away in a chip that snaps clean instead of crushing.
The chisel I reached for cost fourteen dollars. My grandfather's roll holds tools that cost less than that when they were new and outlived him regardless. Somewhere in the same catalogs there is a chisel that costs a hundred and seven dollars for the same half inch of steel. I have wanted for a long time to know what that difference buys. Not what a forum says it buys. So I went looking for measurements, and found mostly an absence.
The Flat Line Under the Price Curve

Lee Valley lists the 1/2" Narex Classic at $14.00 and the 1/2" Veritas PM-V11 at $107.00. That is 7.6 times the money for a claimed hardness difference of two to four Rockwell points. Widen the frame and it gets stranger. The Hazard Fraught price tracker logs Harbor Freight's six-piece Windsor Design set, item 56364, at $12.99, about $2.17 a chisel. That is a tracker's figure, not Harbor Freight's own; verify it in the store. Set against the $107.00 PM-V11 it gives a spread of roughly 49 times, over a published hardness field of about 57 to 63 HRC.
Whatever the money above thirty-odd dollars is buying, on the published numbers it is not hardness.
Where the Specs Go Quiet
Lee Valley lists the Stanley Sweetheart 750, made in Sheffield, as chrome-vanadium at Rc57–62. Five points. Two chisels out of one set can sit further apart than a Narex Classic sits from a Lie-Nielsen.
Irwin publishes no Rockwell number at all. 731 Woodworks lists the Marples five-piece set at $97.34 regular and $73.90 on a deal, and its spec language runs to "Fully Forged Steel Core" and "High Quality Hardened Steel Blade," which is nothing anyone can check.
Even a single chisel gets specced two ways. Rockler describes the Narex Richter as Cr-V at a minimum of 62 HRC. Lee Valley's own listing for the same chisel gives Rc61–63. A floor of 62 and a band opening at 61 are not the same promise.
The Carbide That Pops Out
Hardness is not toughness, and this is where the intuition fails. Ron Hock, quoted by The Wood Whisperer, describes the chromium in A2 as forming "chromium carbides: tough, hard particles dispersed through the steel." They raise wear resistance, but they sit in the matrix loosely enough to "pop out under the stress of honing or cutting leaving a small gap in the edge." O1 carries no such carbides; its grain is, in Hock's account, "as fine as possible which allows honing to the sharpest possible edge." Holds longer, or takes keener. Pick one.
Lie-Nielsen's own catalog admits as much. Its bevel-edge chisels run A2 from 1/4" through 1", but O1 in the 1/8", 3/16" and 1-1/2" sizes, all of them hardened to Rockwell 60–62, cryogenically treated and double tempered. On a narrow chisel, a popped carbide costs proportionally more edge.
Lee Valley put numbers to the mechanism during its PM-V11 development, and those numbers deserve an asterisk first: this is a company measuring its own steel against everyone else's. The impact rig dropped a 2.9 kg weight 300 mm, 8.5 joules, onto a blade taking a 1/8" chop in clamped red oak, a species chosen for sitting mid-range on the Janka scale. Scored one to ten for edge failure, PM-V11 came in at 10, A2 at 1.5, O1 at 1. The wear test, paring MDF in 0.020" to 0.030" shavings out to 100 linear feet across 21 materials, put PM-V11 and M4 at 9 and left A2 at 1.5 and O1 at 1 again. Lee Valley itself cautions that the scale is not a multiplier.
Those were bare blade steels, not finished chisels, and red oak is not maple. Sit with it anyway: the two steels in the most admired Western chisels finished at the bottom for chip resistance in the only rigorous published impact test available to read. David Savage, writing at Lost Art Press, gives the shop-floor version of the same trade: A2 "holds the 30° edge for a long time" and suits the woodworker who does not sharpen daily, while O1 comes keener. Opinion, not measurement, but it matches what my hands have told me.
Two Tests in Maple, and What They Found
Two people have actually put cheap and dear chisels into maple and looked hard at the edges afterward.
Admiral Bumblebee, in 2016, took 20 hard measured chops across hard maple grain, mortise fashion, with three 1/2" chisels: a Neiko set, a Harbor Freight four-piece, and a Narex from Lee Valley. All were honed at 25° on Shapton Kuromaku stones through #1000, #5000, #8000 and #12000. Afterward the Harbor Freight chisel showed no visible damage. The Narex edge rolled and came back with stropping. The Neiko chipped severely and needed its back re-flattened. The strokes required to restore each edge tell the same story: 12, 12, 13 and 10 for the Harbor Freight across those four grits, against 60, 40, 60 and 100 for the Neiko.
The cheapest chisel in that test was not the worst one. Price and performance did not track.
The second test unsettles the premise entirely. An independent site, chisel-test.netlify.app, chopped twenty 1/16" slices from soft maple with a Buck Brothers 3/4" out of a $21 three-piece set and a roughly $100 Veritas PM-V11, photographing each edge under magnification at 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 15 and 20 chops. Three preparations: flat 30° finished on a Shapton Pro 12000; 30° off a Shapton Pro 1000 then buffed; 30° off the 1000 then stropped at 40–45°. The buffed edges showed essentially no visible damage. The flat-honed edges folded and chipped. Both chisels. The cheap one and the dear one alike.
How the edge was finished moved the outcome further than seventy-nine dollars of purchase price did. That was soft maple rather than hard, the evidence is photographic rather than numerical, and the author is not named on the page. Read it as a strong hint, not a proof. It is still the most useful hint on offer.
Same Factory, Different Sticker
If the money is not buying hardness, the specs point at grinding.
Lee Valley says Richter blades are ground flat to within ±0.1 mm along the first two-thirds of their length from the tip. Taylor Toolworks puts the Richter's sides at 0.5 mm with a 24° grind, and its cryogenic step at −190 °C in liquid nitrogen. Rockler lists Narex Premium sides at about 1 mm, twice as thick, with a 25° bevel and the same 59 HRC. Lie-Nielsen grinds its backs flat and finishes them by hand at 400 grit, sharpening at 30° with a 35° secondary bevel advised.
Here is the part I keep returning to. The $14.00 Narex Classic and the $36.50 Narex Richter come out of the same factory in Bystrice, Czech Republic. The extra money buys flatness tolerance, thinner sides, a bath in liquid nitrogen, and better handle work, all real things worth real money to someone cutting dovetails. They are simply not hardness.
Prices move too, and unevenly. In the seven-chisel 1/2" comparison Megan Fitzpatrick and Christopher Schwarz ran at Never Sponsored in August 2024, the Ashley Iles Mk2 was $43.95; Tools for Working Wood wants $61.95 today, a 41% rise. The Lie-Nielsen was $95.00 then. It is $95.00 now.
What It Would Take to Actually Know
Here is the honest accounting. Every hardness figure above is a claim. Not one chisel in this lineup has a published, independently measured Rockwell number, because checking one means a hardness tester nobody at this end of the trade owns.
Sharpness, at least, is cheap to measure. Sharpening Supplies explains BESS, the Brubacher Edge Sharpness Scale, as the grams of force needed to push an edge through a fine polymer thread: 100 to 1,000 grams normal, above 1,000 very dull, below 100 exceedingly sharp, lower being sharper. Edge-On-Up sells the PT50B at $189.00 with 5-gram resolution, and the PT50A at $269.00 resolving to 1 gram up to 3,000. Five grams will not satisfy a metallurgist, but it will track an edge from freshly honed to visibly tired across a morning of chopping.
Hard maple is the right wood to ask in. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory puts sugar maple's Janka side hardness at 1,450 lbf, and the Wood Database agrees. Lee Valley chose red oak for its own testing precisely because it sits mid-range, so a hard maple test would be harsher than the manufacturer's.
Until someone runs it, buy on what is documented rather than what is asserted: flatness tolerance, side thickness, the shape of the handle in your palm, and whether the maker will publish a number at all. Then put the difference into sharpening. The tock of a mallet into hard maple sounds the same whether the steel cost two dollars or a hundred. What differs is how many of them the edge will take before you walk back to the stones, and on that number, for these chisels, in this wood, nobody has done the arithmetic. A hard maple board, a PT50B, and one clear Saturday would settle more argument than a decade of forum posts has.
