Yo, a full sheet of 3/4 ply does not make the turn from my stairwell into my apartment. I've tried. Two flights, one landing, and a doorframe with opinions. So the sheet never comes up whole. It gets broken down on the sidewalk on a Saturday morning, laid over a couple slabs of foam, while a neighbor watches me like I need a permit for it.

That's the whole case for a track saw in a place like mine. No table saw. No outfeed. No room for either, and no truck to go get something bigger. The track is the fence, the sheet is the table, the sidewalk is the shop.

So when a track saw turns up at what looks like eighty-something bucks, I want to know exactly one thing: does it rip straight enough to build a cabinet with. Then I went looking for somebody who'd actually measured it.

Nobody has.

Nobody's Published the Number, Not Even the Good Ones

I'm not talking about the spec-sheet listicles. Those I expected.

I mean the outlets that put these saws on real plywood. Woodworker's Journal ran six track saws through 100 linear feet each of melamine and birch ply. Fine Homebuilding's 2024 test put eight cordless track saws through a full shop workout. Bob Vila tested nine in-shop. Reviewed.com's tester bought a WEN and cut down about five sheets of 3/4 ply with it.

All hands-on. Not one publishes a number in thousandths. You get "minimal tear-out." You get great cut quality. Adjectives. Adjectives don't tell you whether your face frame closes.

What does circulate is worse than silence. ToolsRadar has a page tossing around ±0.003" over 8-foot rips and ±0.002 to 0.005" on 4x8 sheets, with no methodology, no citation, and the author sourcing it to what they remember from their foreman days. Numbers styled like lab data that are actually just somebody talking. Printing those would make this article the thing it's supposed to replace.

So here's the honest state of the category: from $121 to Festool money, measured cut accuracy is undocumented. Every tier. Every brand.

Steal the Pass/Fail Line From AWI

If nobody's measuring, at least let's agree on what winning looks like.

The Architectural Woodwork Institute publishes tolerances for finished casework in ANSI/AWI 0620-2024, and they're specific. A wood-to-wood gap at a field joint is allowed 0.4 mm, .016", at Premium grade. Custom grade allows 0.8 mm, .031", call it a thirty-second. Economy gets 1.2 mm, .047". Flushness variation at those same joints runs the same three numbers.

Read that carefully, because I nearly got it wrong myself. Those are installation and aesthetic tolerances for the finished box. AWI is not writing saw specs, and it has never said a word about track saws. But it gives us the outcome the cut has to support. If a rip is off by more than .016" and you don't fit and trim afterward, Premium is gone before you've picked up a clamp.

That's the line. Sixteen thou. Now "good enough for cabinets" is a number instead of a vibe.

That $83 Saw Is Actually About $198

The cheap-entry story falls apart on arithmetic, not on quality.

WEN's own product page lists the CT1065 at $121.81. Not eighty-something. Reviewed.com's tester reports paying $99.90 for the saw, so it moves around, but I couldn't open a page anywhere showing $83 and I'm not printing a number I couldn't read.

And the saw doesn't come with a track. WEN's matching rail, the CT9502, is 100 inches in two 50-inch sections with adapters and set screws, and WEN lists it at $76.26. Saw plus rail is about $198 before a blade upgrade, before clamps, before a vacuum. Reviewed's tester landed in the same place independently, roughly $200 all in, pairing the saw with two Powertec tracks.

Two hundred bucks for a system that breaks down sheets in a walk-up is still a steal. It's just not eighty-three dollars, and every buying decision downstream of that number was built on sand.

Depth of Cut Is Not Where the Money Goes

Here's the thing that made me laugh. The $121 WEN cuts deeper than the Festool.

Specs from each manufacturer's own page. Festool doesn't put a price on the TS 55 page and the retailer I tried threw an error back at me, so I'm not inventing one. Same for DeWalt, whose own page also says a 59-inch track ships with the DWS520K while at least one retailer listing for that SKU says no rail. Check the box contents before you buy, because that materially changes what the tier costs.

Milwaukee's M18 FUEL 2831-20 sits in there too, 6-1/2" blade, 5,600 RPM brushless, bevel stops at 0, 22.5 and 45. Milwaukee doesn't publish its cut depth, but it does publish over 90% dust collection efficiency. In an apartment with shared walls and no cyclone, that claim is worth more to me than half a degree of bevel range.

So where does the money go? Not depth. It goes to the riving knife the WEN's spec list doesn't mention, and to hardware that doesn't move. Reviewed's tester was blunt: "the lack of quality in the controls and knobs also leads to some slop in the precision," the miter controls are "a bit wiggly," and expects those knobs to fail within two years at moderate use. That's the tell. The knobs are the problem.

The Rail Is the Machine

Now the part that reframed the whole question for me.

Nobody publishes a straightness tolerance for guide rails. Not Festool on its FS 1400/2 page, not Powertec. When a user on the Festool Owners Group called Festool service about it, the rep said "the rail should be straight," declined to give a number, and volunteered that the FS 2700/2 isn't good for 8-foot plywood sheets.

The only real measurements out there are from those same owners, and they should be read as user reports, not lab work. User edwarmr measured roughly 0.008" of deviation over 50" against a precision straightedge, about 1/64" across the full 8-foot rail, and watched the straightedge rock on the surface. User mino measured rail-to-rail parallelism within about 0.03 mm and a single rail within 0.02 mm, at the edge of what calipers resolve. Then mino added the detail that actually matters: the rails can bend about 0.5 mm, 0.02", mid-span when the anti-slip pads put lateral tension on them.

Stack that against AWI Premium's .016" gap allowance. A premium rail's own extrusion error and the flex you introduce by how you set it down are the same order of magnitude as the tolerance you're chasing. That's good news for anybody shopping the bottom of the market and bad news for anybody who thinks the receipt does the work.

A $76 Rail and a Blade That Fits Everything

The budget buyer's real advantage is that this category cross-pollinates.

WEN's own rail page describes the CT9502 as universal, compatible with Evolution, Makita and Festool track saws. A $76 rail from the cheapest brand in the room claims to accept a Festool saw. Powertec's 55" rail, $79.99 to $149.99, lists Makita, Festool, WEN and Triton, and explicitly says it is not compatible with Shop Fox, Grizzly, Sheppach or Kreg. TSO Products, meanwhile, lists Kreg ACS among the rails its parallel guide system works with. Those two don't agree and I'm not flattening it. Verify against your own rail profile before you spend.

Blades cross over too, and this is the upgrade I'd make first. Infinity's Track Master blades run a 3/32" (2.4 mm) kerf on a 1.6 mm plate, ATB grind. The 160 mm 48-tooth for the Festool TS 55, item 007-001, is $69.90. The 165 mm version, item 007-005, comes in 20 mm and 30 mm arbors and fits Triton, DeWalt and Makita. The WEN runs a 165 mm blade on a 20 mm arbor, same group. A serious blade physically bolts to the cheap saw.

That matters because blade condition may swamp brand entirely. WoodWeb's pro cabinet shops report melamine chip-out getting measurably worse after just 10 to 20 sheets, and they favor 80-tooth ATB or Hi-ATB with a negative hook around −5°, plus a slow feed. If a fresh premium blade closes the gap between the $121 WEN and a Festool, the deficiency was the included 24-tooth blade all along.

Same logic on scoring. Festool owners describe a 1 to 2 mm shallow pass run backward down the rail to climb-cut the face before plunging full depth, and one notes Mafell specifies 2.5 mm. But that thread doesn't agree with itself. User AstroKeith made about 100 cuts in melamine-faced 20 mm birch ply, forward only, with one minor chip. The WEN ships with a factory scoring detent at 1/8", which is 3.2 mm, deeper than anything those users recommend. Whether that's too deep to work is a live question nobody has answered.

What I'm Cutting Next

I'm not going to hand you numbers I haven't produced. So here's the protocol, and it costs a sheet of MDF and a set of calipers.

The five-cut method, as TSO Products publishes it: start with a panel about 25" (635 mm) square. Cut the right side, taking off about 1/2". Rotate 90° clockwise, repeat for cuts two, three and four. Rotate once more and make cut five, taking about 1". That fifth offcut is the piece you measure, width at both ends with vernier calipers. Sum all four panel sides plus the offcut length, then divide the width difference by that total. TSO's worked example: 0.04 ÷ 9.58 = 0.0042" of error per foot of cut.

The four rotations amplify error, which is exactly why a single pretty-looking cut proves nothing. And a per-foot figure scales straight to a 97" rip and lands next to AWI's .016" line.

Four runs answer everything this category has been dodging. WEN on its own rail. WEN on a Powertec rail, isolating saw from track. WEN with the stock 24-tooth versus a 165 mm 48-tooth, isolating blade from saw. And the rail measured free versus clamped, to see whether mino's 0.5 mm of grip-strip flex is real on my sidewalk.

Until then, buy on the hardware, not the badge. Wiggly knobs are a measurable defect. Depth of cut isn't a reason to spend more, and neither is a logo on the rail.
