One user on the Festool Owners Group finished three projects with Odie's Oil. One is still going strong after four years of hard use. The other two needed refinishing inside six months. Same product, same hands, opposite outcomes. Elsewhere in that thread, one poster's water test had Rubio beating Osmo, another got patchy absorption from Odie's, and Rubio's look got called "dead... so flat and dull" by one camp while the other camp buys it for exactly that reason. That's the forum record on hardwax oils: everybody testing, nobody agreeing.

Anecdotes can't settle this. Paperwork can, at least partly. Two of the three makers publish real numbers, and one independent magazine has run a controlled test with all three on the same bench. Here's what the documents say, and where they go quiet.

What's in the Can, Per Their Own Paperwork

Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C is a two-part system: oil plus accelerator, mixed about 3 to 1, with a 4-to-6-hour pot life. Its Technical Data Sheet is the most complete document of the three, and the headline number is real: 0 g/L VOC for both components, with the flat statement that the product "does not contain any water or solvents." One coat, wipe all the excess within 10 to 15 minutes, done.

Osmo Polyx-Oil 3054 wears the name "High Solid," and Osmo's own US Safety Data Sheet, dated 2018, undercuts the branding. It discloses 10 to 25 percent aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent, which is petroleum distillate, plus a VOC content under 270 g/L and a Combustible Liquid classification. Do the subtraction and "High Solid" works out to roughly 75 to 90 percent solids. That's our arithmetic; Osmo publishes no solids figure. The SDS also lists quartz as the matting agent, which triggers a California Prop 65 listing. None of that makes Osmo a bad finish. It makes "High Solid" a relative term, and if I'm wiping down a big tabletop in a closed shop, I want to know up to a quarter of the can might be solvent.

Odie's Universal Oil publishes a vibe. The manufacturer calls it a "modified and enhanced Tung Oil based finish" with "essential oils and waxes," says it's "solvent free and non toxic" with no added driers or heavy metals, and stops there. No TDS, no solids percentage, no VOC figure, no standards testing. Maybe every claim is true. But when one company documents zero, one admits its solvent content, and one publishes nothing, the gap is itself data.

One safety note that covers all three, because they're all drying oils. Osmo's SDS says it plainly: rags soaked in this stuff "may begin to burn by themselves." Bucket of water or lay them flat to dry. Every single time.

The Price Trap

July 2026 prices, straight from the sellers. Rubio's own US store lists the 390 mL Oil Plus 2C set at $62.99 in clear Pure and $77.99 in any pigmented color. Tools for Working Wood has Osmo 3054 Clear Satin at $21.99 for 0.125 L, $56.99 for 0.75 L, and $169.99 for 2.5 L. Odie's sells its 9 oz jar direct for $69.87.

Per liter, Osmo wins in a walk: about $76 a liter at the 0.75 L size against roughly $161 for Rubio's small Pure set and about $262 for Odie's. But per liter is the wrong denominator, and it's where half the forum fights start. Rubio's TDS claims 300 to 500 square feet per liter in its single coat, marked "merely indicative," to their credit. Osmo specs 258 square feet per liter per coat on a standard two-coat schedule. Odie's claims 21 to 25-plus square feet per ounce on domestic hardwoods. Run it out (this is our math, built on each maker's own coverage claim):

The cheapest can per liter is the most expensive finish per square foot. That two-coat schedule is the trap in every per-can comparison. And if you want Rubio in a color, add 24 percent; the pigmented sets cost $77.99 against $62.99 for clear, which no forum cost chart bothers to mention.

The Cure-Time Reversal

Per-coat dry time is another number that lies by omission. Rubio's TDS says 12 to 24 hours to dry, light use at 24 to 36 hours, 80 percent cured at 48 hours, and full cure around five days with the Part B accelerator mixed in. Skip Part B and Rubio USA's help center says you're waiting about 21 days, so mix the accelerator. Osmo's 8 to 10 hours per coat sounds fast until you remember it's two coats, and Osmo USA says two weeks to full cure before you damp-mop or set anything on it. Odie's sets in 10 minutes to 3 hours before buff-off, takes light use in 24 to 48 hours, and handles standing liquids after 3 to 5 days.

So the honest liquid-safe ranking runs Odie's at 3 to 5 days, Rubio at 5, and Osmo at 2 weeks. Nearly the reverse of what the per-coat numbers suggest. Finish a table with Osmo the week of kickoff and you're eating off the kitchen island past the second Saturday of the season.

The One Bench Test That Counts

Australian Wood Review's David Luckensmeyer ran the only verified controlled test I can find that includes all three products: eight hardwax oils, a 60-day evaluation, 24-hour water exposure, 24-hour red wine, a 15-minute maintained acetone puddle, and weighted scratch testing.

Rubio came through the 24-hour water test "completely unaffected" on both kauri and blackwood, no surface marking at all, and ranked first for scratch resistance. From one coat. Odie's ranked first for surface look and feel with excellent water and solvent resistance, but demanded the most muscle: vigorous application and up to an hour's wait before buffing. Osmo went "quite sticky" under the acetone puddle and tied for last in scratch resistance.

Now the caveat that explains half the internet's confusion. AWR tested Osmo 3032 Original, not the 3054 High Solid on American shelves. The Wood Whisperer's 2023 comparison used Osmo 2K Wood Oil, also not 3054, and skipped Odie's entirely. A Festool poster nailed the root problem: "Osmo makes several types of finish," and people compare different formulations without knowing it. As far as I can verify, no independent controlled test of 3054 exists. When two forum guys report opposite Osmo results, decent odds they weren't testing the same product. For what it's worth, Naperville Hardwood's four-month trial on real floors landed the same way: Rubio tied for first with Pallmann Magic Oil, Osmo Polyx second by a few points.

And heat, since every kitchen-table buyer asks: nobody has published a controlled heat test of these three that I could verify. Rubio's TDS claims heat resistance with no number attached. Until someone parks an instrumented hot pan on all three, that's a claim, not a result.

The Repair Myth, Measured

The pitch that sells every hardwax oil is the invisible spot repair. The paperwork backs a process, at least. Rubio's TDS lays out a full renovation protocol: clean, scuff with a maroon pad, re-oil in sections, wipe within 10 to 15 minutes, no stripping. Heartwood Tools, an Osmo dealer, says 3054 spot-repairs without sanding, and Osmo USA says it won't crack, flake, or peel. Odie's says a maintenance coat is ready for use after just 10 hours.

Then Marc Spagnuolo at The Wood Whisperer actually repaired damaged samples across five hardwax oils and looked at them. Every repair was visible from most angles. His words: "not perfect, or even great." That's the honest version. These oils repair far easier than a film finish, not invisibly. A finisher in the Festool thread said the other quiet part out loud: any of these non-film oils will require regular maintenance. Buy one expecting a maintenance schedule, not a miracle.

Match the Oil to the Job

Luckensmeyer's own conclusion was that there is no one best hardwax oil, and after all this paper I agree. Pick by the job.

A table that takes daily abuse: Rubio. Unaffected by 24 hours of water in the only controlled test, first in scratch resistance, 0 g/L VOC on an actual data sheet, one coat. Its ultra-flat look is a feature or a bug depending on your taste, and mind the application window: the TDS wants 47 to 86 degrees and 35 to 60 percent humidity, which rules out my garage for a good stretch of an Austin summer.

Best feel under your hand, and you don't mind working for it: Odie's. First for look and feel at AWR, cheap per square foot, but the most physical to apply, with no published numbers, and that Festool user's two-in-three failure rate should keep you humble about technique.

Osmo: the only one citing test standards on its US page, DIN 68861-1A for liquids and DIN 53160 for saliva and sweat, and the cheapest per liter. Also the priciest per finished foot, two coats, two weeks to cure, and the exact formulation Americans buy has never been independently torture-tested that I can find.

Whatever you lean toward, the real test costs almost nothing. Osmo's 0.125 L sampler is $21.99, and Rubio's smallest set finishes over a hundred square feet. Finish a couple of offcuts of your actual project wood, in your actual shop humidity, and leave a sweating glass of iced tea on one overnight. No forum thread can tell you how a finish behaves on your lumber in your August. Your scrap bin can.
