My nightstand was a disaster zone. Phone, watch, wallet, keys, glasses, loose change. I wanted a single station to hold my "Every Day Carry" (EDC).
I designed a Walnut and Brass Valet Tray. It features a wireless charger, a watch post, and a scooped bowl for coins.
Material & Tools
- Black Walnut: For the luxury look.
- Brass Rod: 1/4" solid brass for the watch holder.
- Wireless Charger: An Anker charging puck.
The Build Process
Step 1: The Phone Pad
I used a router to carve a shallow recess for the phone to sit in.
- Charging: I routed a circular pocket from the bottom side of the wood, leaving only 1/8" of wood thickness.
- Magic: I glued the wireless charger into the bottom pocket. The induction works through the wood! You just drop your phone on the walnut, and it charges.
Step 2: The Scoop
I wanted a smooth, organic bowl for keys/coins.
- Cove Bit: I used a large bowl-carving router bit.
- Sanding: Sanding concave curves is miserable. I spent an hour hand-sanding this to 400 grit until it felt like glass.
Step 3: The Watch Stand
I drilled a hole and inserted a polished brass rod upright. I glued a small block of walnut on top. This holds my watch, keeping the band open and the face visible (Nightstand Mode).
Finishing
Walnut and Brass are a classic combo. I polished the brass to a mirror shine. I finished the wood with Odie's Oil (a wax/oil blend). It smells like honey and leaves a satin sheen that feels amazing to touch.
Conclusion
Now, when I empty my pockets at night, everything has a place.
- Phone starts charging invisibly.
- Watch goes on the post.
- Keys go in the bowl. It brings a sense of calm to the end of the day. And it looks like something from a boutique hotel.
